Money tips for young professionals starting out

4/21/2020

I had the pleasure of having a chat with Theodore Glave.

Theodore is a coach and founder of The Priority Process, which provides resources to help young professionals grow their careers and manage their priorities.

He reached out to me a few weeks ago for a video chat about what money tips I have for people who just started their careers in corporate.

It was a fun conversation, below are some of the topics we talked about:

  • When do we start talking or teaching about the concepts of money to people?

  • What is the foundation of financial literacy? How does one get started on budgeting? (I have a course around that)

  • How much money do we really need for retirement? Understand the different ways your retirement income is being taxed.

  • How should people start allocating their money when they just started their career?

  • My opinion about life insurance.

  • What’s the best thing you can do for yourself financially when you just got out of college and got your first job?

Plus others….

Check out the video and let us know what you think or if you have more questions. ?

Money is the root of so much AWESOME!

Contrary to popular belief, money by itself is neither good nor bad, friend nor foe, filthy nor clean.

Money is just a unit of measurement used in the act of giving or receiving.

It is just a tool, what you do with it and how you think, feel and speak about it gives it a
personality.

And depending on what personality you give it, you’re either going to want to surround yourself with it or stay away from it.

Which is why if you think money is bad or dirty, and reinforcing those thoughts by speaking badly about it, is one of the leading causes of staying broke.

So, say with me    👉🏻   “ Money is the root of so much AWESOME !!”

What is your happy money number?

“Do you make more money than when you were at corporate?”

So someone asked me this in a comment on a post I did yesterday on LinkedIn.

And here’s my direct and honest answer.

I don’t need to make that much money to live a lifestyle I love.

Too many people are in the rat race because they don’t know what their “happy money number” is.

That’s what I help my clients figure out.

My happy money number is being able to live a lifestyle I love till I'm 90 when I estimate to expire. 😅
I have built my retirement model around this.

Yes, the corporate life was hard to give up, I had amazing benefits and a nice steady paycheck. 200% match on 401K anyone?
But as I look back, I have no regrets!

I have had so much freedom this past year.

I get to pick my own schedule, create my own rules.

Nobody to ask for permission. Ever had those awful bosses and nonstop re-orgs? Yep, I don’t miss them! I remember right before I quit my job, I was bounced around three managers. I hated having to adapt to a new boss at such a short span of time (within a year).

I definitely love being my own boss!

It’s just a dream come true for me and that’s priceless!

I’m also approaching my one-year anniversary.
My last day at Corp was on May 3rd of 2019.

I even wrote a blog how my first month being on my own went.

Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security (CARES) Act
CARES was signed by the President on March 27, 2020.

The stimulus package was signed to provide financial relief to individuals, families, and businesses.

Helpful calculator for you to calculate your stimulus check.

The rebate is a one-time payment from the Federal Government and is mainly referred to as the stimulus checks.

The amount is subject to income limitations – phase-out begins at $75K of AGI (Adjusted Gross Income).

See the screenshot below.
Picture

How is income determined for the payment?
  • Based on AGI on 2019 tax return if filed
  • Else, based on AGI of 2018 if filed
  • Else, based on 2019 Social Security or Railroad Retirement Benefits statement on file with the SSA

If you meet one of the criteria below should still file for 2019 tax return even if you are not required to do so
  • Filed a 2018 return but have a new qualifying child or children since 2018
  • Have a taxable income in 2019, even if under the filing threshold

You should not file a “zero” return to receive the rebate.

The following individuals are NOT eligible for a recovery
  • Nonresident aliens
  • Any individual who was claimed or could be claimed as a dependent on another individual’s 2019 income tax return
  • Any individual who does not have a social security number
  • Any qualifying child who has not been reported on a 2018 or 2019 tax return with a valid SSN

Will the recovery check need to be paid back?
  • According to Congressional Research Service (CRS), no “when taxpayers file their 2020 income tax returns in 2021, they find that the advanced credit is greater than the actual credit, then they would not be required to repay the excess credit. In contrast, if the advanced credit is less than the actual credit, then taxpayers would be able to claim the difference in their 2020 income tax returns.
How will individuals receive their rebates?
  • It will be issued via direct deposit to individuals who have their banking data from a prior tax refund on file with the IRS.
    • Individuals who filed a tax return in 2018 or later and requested their refund be issued via direct deposit for that year will be considered to have their banking information on file with the IRS.
    • For those who do not have bank information on file, the Treasury Department is working on creating a web-based system to gather it.
    • IF no bank information is provided via the above methods, a paper check will be issued.
